Collection Spotlight: Patti Mayor (1872-1962)

In 2022, Grundy Art Gallery is marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Patti Mayor with a Collection Spotlight exhibition dedicated to her work.

Mayor’s work predominantly takes the form of painted portraits of women and young girls with her mostly unnamed subjects drawn from Preston’s working class population. On loan from the Harris is the painting “The Half-Timer” which depicts a twelve year old girl called Annie Hill, a ‘half-timer’ who splits her time between work and attending school. The young girl had just started working in the Horrockses Stanley Street Yard Works in Preston. The title refers to the fact that children split their time between working part-time in the mill and receiving an education.

Painted in 1906 the painting was famously taken out of its frame and carried as part of a protest march by suffragettes and their supporters in London in 1908.

An opportunity to see one of our most popular paintings whilst we are closed for the Harris Your Place project.

On until 11 June 2022
